Lecture by Dr. Olena Melnykova-Kurhanova on 23/01/2024
On the occasion of Russia's ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine, Dr Olena Melnykova-Kurhanova, visiting fellow at the Chair of Political Communication with a focus on Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet region, gave the lecture "How Mariupol's Journalists experienced the Conquest of their City" on 23 January 2024.
The public lecture focussed on the peculiarities of journalists' activities under the information blockade, the tools of Russian propaganda influence during the siege of Mariupol. The research fellow shared the first results of her research based on 22 interviews with the city's survivors of the siege. The event was held in the format of an open reflection seminar. The meeting had a hybrid format (offline and online). The seminar was dedicated to the ongoing full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war.
Dr. Olena Melnykova-Kurhanova is visiting fellow at the Chair of Political Communication with a focus on Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet region. She conducts research on media literacy and fact-checking, public communication, dissident communication, propaganda, destructive narratives, false news.
